Price Comparison Sites: The Best Platforms and Tips for Retailers

“Trust is good, but comparing is better.” Your potential customers think the same way. That is exactly why price comparison sites play a central role in modern e-commerce.

Whether shoppers are looking for a television, shoes, or baby food, very few commit to one seller straight away. Instead, they research and compare. In this article, you will learn how price comparison sites work, why they offer a real sales opportunity for retailers, and how to get the most out of them with SnapTrade.

How to Use Price Comparison Sites for Your Business

Why Price Comparison Portals Matter for Online Retailers

The numbers speak for themselves: according to Statista, 71% of respondents said they always research online before making larger purchases. Price comparison portals are especially popular here, particularly among the high-spending 25 to 34 age group. More than one third of consumers even compare prices for low-cost products every time. Retailers who are not visible there are simply overlooked.

How Do Price Comparison Sites Work?

Price comparison sites such as idealo or billiger.de usually operate on a CPC model, which stands for cost per click. This means retailers pay a small amount, for example €0.34 to €0.60, when a user clicks on a product.

To have your products listed, you submit your item data via a product feed such as CSV or XML. Some portals, including idealo, even offer interface connections for automated updates.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Price Comparison Sites at a Glance

Advantages of price comparison sitesDisadvantages of price comparison sites
High purchase intent: Users who visit a price comparison portal to find a specific product are often already far along in their decision-making process. They are therefore very likely to complete a purchase, which is why price comparison sites usually achieve strong conversion rates.

Low effort: Once your product data feed has been set up, there is usually very little else you need to do for the platform to list and display your products.

New customer acquisition: Using the visibility of price comparison sites is much easier than building that level of visibility yourself through SEO. That makes these platforms a strong channel for attracting new customers.

Greater brand visibility: Even if a user does not click on your product, they are still exposed to your brand for the first time and become aware that it exists. That is far better than not being seen at all. It is also free, as you do not pay any click costs unless someone actually clicks.

Positive spillover effect: Price comparison sites usually aim to create transparency and therefore tend to enjoy a good reputation. If your company appears on such a platform, some of that positive perception can carry over to your brand.

Dependency: As useful as price comparison sites can be, there is also a downside. Once you start relying on one of these platforms, you enter a relationship that you can influence only to a limited extent.

Costs: There are very few truly free price comparison sites. Even if the expected return justifies the investment, the platform costs still reduce your margin.

Negative spillover effect: The spillover effect can also work in the opposite direction if a comparison site attracts negative attention. This happened with dooyoo.de, once considered a pioneer among price comparison portals, but later criticised over fake reviews. Today, dooyoo and another once well-known comparison portal are no longer active. (Source: cure-intelligence.com)

Price Comparison Sites in Detail (idealo, billiger.de, Google Shopping)

There are many platforms for finding the lowest price, which can generally be divided into broad comparison sites and niche providers. Below, we introduce three of the most popular options.

idealo

idealo is certainly one of the best-known, if not the best-known, names in price comparison. Its popularity is one of the platform’s biggest strengths, as it brings a high volume of visitors. Retailers who list their products on idealo.de can be fairly confident that they will gain visibility. On the customer side, the portal stands out with a well-designed user experience, numerous filter and sorting options, and strong performance in consumer studies. Users can also set up a price alert to be notified when a product drops below a certain price threshold. In addition to shopping offers, the portal also compares flights, hotels, rental properties, and vehicles.

Costs on idealo

idealo works on a CPC model. The cost per click is EUR 0.56. Retailers must also generate a minimum monthly turnover of EUR 20 in order to list their products. This low threshold makes idealo accessible even for very small businesses that run their online shop as a side business, at least in theory. The comparison sites below may offer lower-cost alternatives in some cases.

idealo is a good fit for you if you:

  • sell to a broad target group
  • are looking for a well-known platform
  • can absorb the click costs

billiger.de

billiger.de is part of the e-commerce service provider solute and, according to its own information, lists more than 100 million offers across Germany. This makes the portal one of the major players in price comparison as well. Through various subdomains, customers can also compare electricity and gas contracts, insurance, DSL, and mobile tariffs. However, the core business of billiger.de, similar to idealo.de, is price listing. Deals and bargains are already highlighted on the homepage. On product detail pages, users can transparently track average price developments and get a better sense of whether they are really looking at a strong offer.

Costs on billiger.de

Unlike idealo, billiger.de is not a standalone comparison portal. Listing products requires registration with solute’s own e-commerce network, soluteNet. In addition to the comparison portal billiger.de, soluteNet also gives access to partner networks and other solute services. Fees on billiger.de or through solute are also based on a CPC model. At present, as of February 2022, the CPC is EUR 0.34. Compared with idealo, this makes the portal significantly cheaper. However, companies must prove a minimum monthly turnover of EUR 500 in order to register with soluteNet.

billiger.de is a good fit for you if you:

  • want a particularly transparent comparison environment
  • would like to use the services of an e-commerce provider

Google Shopping

Google Shopping plays a special role because it is not really a traditional comparison portal. Instead, the service allows you to display your products directly in Google Search. Since many potential customers start their product search on Google, this can significantly increase the visibility of your listings. It can be a particularly useful option for small businesses or retailers who are new to e-commerce and do not yet have much reach through SEO.

Costs on Google Shopping

Unlike the two comparison portals above, Google Shopping can also be used free of charge. Google introduced this option in 2020 to support retailers that had experienced losses during the coronavirus pandemic. Paid Shopping Ads, which already existed before the free listings were introduced, can still be used and are generally given priority over free listings. CPCs for paid ads vary significantly depending on the product. For both models, retailers must register in Google Merchant Center and set up a product feed. The most common shop systems offer suitable integrations for this.

Google Shopping is a good fit for you if you:

  • want to increase your visibility in search results
  • would like to use free Shopping listings

In the End, the Total Price Is What Matters

Every price comparison site uses different criteria to decide which products appear in search results. In that sense, the logic is somewhat comparable to the Amazon BuyBox. As a retailer, you can improve your position, for example, by offering low shipping costs or enabling direct checkout through the comparison site.

At the same time, one thing is clear: the purpose of every price comparison site is to show users the best available deal. That means you need a competitive product price to stand a real chance of appearing in the results at all. If your prices do not meet that standard, strong performance in other areas will only help to a limited extent. In most cases, it will be much harder to gain visibility and generate more sales through price comparison sites.

Checklist: 7 Key To-Dos for Retailers

For your products to appear on price comparison sites such as idealo or billiger.de, and more importantly to attract clicks, a few basic requirements need to be in place. The following seven to-dos will help you position your offers effectively and significantly improve your chances of conversion:

1. Calculate competitive prices

Set prices that not only protect your margin but also hold up well against competing offers. A price that is too high reduces visibility, while a price that is too low eats into your profit.

2. Keep product data up to date and complete

Make sure your product information such as title, description, stock level, and GTIN is always accurate. This helps you avoid feed disapprovals and creates a better user experience.

3. Format your product feed correctly (CSV/XML)

Your product data feed must meet the requirements of the respective platform. It should be structured, complete, and updated regularly. Incorrect or incomplete feeds can lead to listing interruptions.

4. Offer strong reviews and reliable service

Shoppers pay close attention to product reviews and seller ratings. Reliable customer service, fast delivery times, and genuine reviews strengthen your brand perception and support buying decisions.

5. Keep shipping costs low

High shipping costs can put customers off, even if the product price itself is attractive. Ideally, you should factor in free shipping to improve your conversion rate.

6. Optimise your product images

Use high-quality, clear images with a neutral background. Professional product photos increase click-through rates and build trust, especially when users are comparing similar products.

7. Automate with repricing tools such as SnapTrade

Use a repricing tool to automatically adjust your prices to market developments. SnapTrade improves your pricing strategy in real time and helps you stay competitive without constant manual effort.

Automate Your Pricing Strategy with SnapTrade

Frequently Asked Questions About Price Comparison Sites

Price comparison sites list offers from different retailers for the same product and direct users to the respective shop when they click. The basis is usually a product data feed, for example with information on price, availability, shipping, and GTIN.

For many product ranges, idealo, billiger.de, and Google Shopping are key traffic sources. Which platform is the best fit depends heavily on your category, competition, margins, and feed quality.

Retailers usually submit product data via feed formats such as CSV or XML, or through an API. The platform matches offers using identifiers such as GTIN and displays them in product listings and price comparisons.

idealo imports price data from retailer files at short intervals, for example every 30 minutes. Price discrepancies usually occur when shop prices are changed but the feed or API data is not updated accordingly.

Google distinguishes between free listings and paid Shopping Ads. Free listings can appear at no cost, while paid ads receive additional advertising placements.

Important attributes include title, link, image, price, availability, and correct shipping information. Google also states that GTIN is required if a GTIN exists for the product.

Typical issues include inconsistent price and stock data between the shop and the feed, incorrect shipping costs or delivery times, missing product identifiers such as GTIN, and outdated or out-of-stock listings. This can lead to disapprovals, poorer matching, or lower conversion rates.

billiger.de is operated as a price comparison site within the solute GmbH ecosystem and is described in solute’s company materials, among other places, as “our price comparison site billiger.de.”
